Raja Harishchandra, ancestor of Lord Ram and king of Ayodhya donated his Entire kingdom !
Once upon a time, Raja Harishchandra, an ancestor of Lord Ram and king of Ayodhya, was the subject of conversation in Vaikunth. During a usual meeting of Brahmarishis and saints, where Vishwamitra was also present, Narad Ji praised King Harishchandra, stating that he was the only truly great king on Earth.
Vishwamitra, who had also been a king, became jealous upon hearing this. He decided to test Harishchandra to see how great he truly was. Vishwamitra first attacked him with the intention of proving him unworthy by entering his dream.
In the dream, Sage Vishwamitra told King Harishchandra, "My son is going to be married, but a princess will not marry him because instead of having a 'Raaj Yog' (a specific planetary combination indicating royalty) he do not hold any kingdom power. They have given me a condition: my son must hold a kingdom if I want him to marry her."
Vishwamitra then told the king, "Raja Harishchandra, you are a great donor and a true king, and you have spent your entire life ruling. Now, let my son rule the kingdom."
In the dream, Raja Harishchandra took a pledge, holding water in his hand, and said, "From now on, this kingdom will be ruled by your son. He will be the king from now on."
The next morning, the queen noticed stress on Raja Harishchandra's face and asked him the reason. The king replied, "I had a dream that a saint came and asked me to donate the rule of my kingdom to him."
As Raja Harishchandra went outside after getting ready, Vishwamitra appeared, having changed his form, and said, "Maharaj, I came into your dream and asked you to donate your kingdom and your seat to my son."
Raja Harishchandra clasped his hands and said, "Yes, I do." He then donated the entire kingdom to the sage and stepped down from his position.
This act is known as the mark of a true devotee of God, as he held the power to donate his entire kingdom to a sage, even in a mere dream.
